Hello sailors. I have a Nonsuch 30 wishbone catboat and normal gybes can be a danger. So: we often do a "chicken jibe" which is really a tack thru about 270 or more degrees. It usually works but the other day in 25 knots of wind, the boat did the 27o degree turn and ended up in irons with the wind abeam. TWICE!, and I was in a long distance race.
Not enough speed to allow the rudder to turn downwind; and, the 90 degree apparent wind creating more windward lift than downwind drag.
That is the surprising part. The only solution was to trim in, get on a close reach and then pay out the sheet and turn back to a run. A true quirk. Comments?
